Finished architectural shingle roof on a newly built two-story home

A first roof, built right from the deck up

New construction, an addition, a garage or a detached structure. No old roof to tear off, so the whole job is about the layers underneath the shingle, and those are the ones nobody sees again.

What’s included

What a new install covers

With nothing to tear off, every hour goes into the build. Here is what goes on the roof, in the order it goes on.

    Deck

    • Deck inspection and prep

We check the framer’s decking for span, fastening and flat before a single nail of ours goes in.

  2. Roofer rolling out leak barrier along the edge of a roof deck

    Water barrier

    • Underlayment and ice-and-water

Synthetic underlayment across the field, ice-and-water membrane in the valleys and along the eaves.

    • Flashing and penetrations

Step, valley and wall flashing plus boots on every pipe, set as the roof goes on rather than patched in after.

  3. Roofer laying starter strip at the eave

    System

    • GAF shingle system

Starter, architectural field shingle, hip and ridge, all from one system so the warranty holds together.

    • Ridge and soffit ventilation

Intake and exhaust balanced on the plan, not guessed at. A new roof is the only easy time to get this right.

How it works

From dry-in to final nail

New builds run on somebody else’s schedule. We work to the framing date and keep the structure dry the day we get there.

  1. Step 1 of 4

    Plans and site visit

We measure off the plans or the framed structure, and confirm pitch, ventilation and the shingle you want.

  2. Step 2 of 4

    Written scope

Materials, layers and a real number on paper. Built to compare against other bids line by line.

  3. Step 3 of 4

    Dry-in

Underlayment and flashing go on as soon as the deck is ready, so weather stops being a risk to the build.

  4. Step 4 of 4

    Install and walkthrough

Shingle, ridge and vents go on, then we walk the finished roof with you, hand over the paperwork and magnet-sweep the site.

Straight answers

What to expect on a new install

The three questions builders and homeowners ask before the framing is even up.

  • GAF

    One complete system

Starter, field, ridge and accessories from one manufacturer, which is what the lifetime limited warranty requires.

  • One day

    For most structures

A garage or addition is usually a single day. A full new build depends on size and pitch, and the date is in the scope.

  • Our crews

    Not a labor broker

The same Hill Top crews that do our replacements. The foreman introduces himself on day one.

Roof Installation

How is this different from a roof replacement?

There is no old roof to remove. That takes tear-off, disposal and any surprises hiding under the shingles out of the job, which usually makes a new install simpler and cheaper per square than a replacement of the same size. Everything from the underlayment up is identical.

Do you work with builders and general contractors?

Yes, and we are used to the schedule that comes with it. Tell us the framing date and we will put the dry-in as close behind it as the weather allows, so the structure is not sitting open waiting on a roofer.

Will a new install carry the same warranty?

Yes. We install complete GAF systems, which is what the manufacturer’s lifetime limited warranty requires, and our own workmanship stands behind the install. The warranty terms are in the written scope before you sign.

Can you roof a garage, shed or addition on its own?

We do those regularly. Small detached structures are usually a one-day job, and we will tell you honestly if the pitch or size makes it not worth a crew trip on its own, in which case we will pair it with other work.
